As the Federation of Associations That Value Humanity (IDDEF), we support cataract surgeries for underprivileged people across Africa who have lost their sight due to cataracts and are unable to access treatment. Through these surgical procedures, we help patients regain their vision and live more independent lives.

What Is Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye's natural lens, resulting in reduced vision. It usually develops as part of the aging process and can cause blurred vision, faded colors, and increased sensitivity to light. If left untreated, it can progress and lead to severe vision loss.

The Impact of Cataracts in Africa

Vision impairment remains a major public health challenge across Africa. According to the World Health Organization's African Region data, approximately 26.3 million people are living with vision impairment. Of these, 20.4 million have moderate to severe vision impairment, while 5.9 million are blind.

Treatment Is Available, Access Is Limited

Across Africa, thousands of people are living with vision loss caused by cataracts—a condition that can be treated through a simple surgical procedure. However, due to financial hardship and limited access to healthcare, many are forced to live in darkness for years despite having a treatable condition.

What We Do

Through our Cataract Surgery Project, patients receive comprehensive eye examinations and the necessary pre-operative assessments before undergoing surgery performed by qualified medical teams. Following the operation, we also provide essential medication, protective eye care, and follow-up support to help ensure a safe and successful recovery.
